INDIANAPOLIS -- Commissioner Roger Goodell said if the NFL puts a team in Los Angeles, it's probable the league would expand to 34 franchises.

Appearing Thursday night on "Costas Live" on NBC Sports Network, Goodell said the league "doesn't want to move any of our teams."

"We probably don't want to go to 33" teams by adding just one new team if a suitable stadium is built in the Los Angeles area, Goodell said. Instead, the league would consider adding two. An odd number of teams would pose scheduling problems, including at least one club being off each week, and would create one division with five teams.

There has been speculation an L.A. stadium could house two NFL franchises, although Goodell didn't address that Thursday with host Bob Costas.

Goodell said several issues must be solved in L.A., particularly which of two current stadium proposals is best. He didn't suggest any timetable for the NFL returning to Southern California.

If one went to LA I'd stick the other in Portland, Oregon. Make both West divisions 5 teams.
That would make 6 west coast team, still not as many as on east coast.

I think if LA did get a NEW franchise, instead of one relocating there, the chances of Britain getting a team and being that 34th team would increase.

And with a few NFL owners dabbling in British football teams Kroenke -Arsenal, Lerner - Villa, Glazers - United and Robert Kraft has been very supportive, I think what a couple of years ago would seem ridiculous, looks slightly more realistic.

Good point! The fact that one team will have games in 3 consecutive seasons may be their way of further testing the water with that in mind.

Well I think the NFL want to give a major city a team; and with a city like london with 10 million people living there sound reasonable; the thing is london would not be stepping on anybody toes;

Watchman said give Portland a team; well seattle would not be very happy about that as portland fans support the Seahawks and they would lose a big fan base if that was to happen...

Its not just London though is it.

With only 8 home games a seasonthe whole of the British isles is essentially the catchment area.

Well up to the Midlands anyway. I for one would only go all the way down there from up here for maybe two games at the most.

Though I don't think Portland would be as viable as say Las Vegas or maybe Albuquerque, there are a lot of cities that I'm sure could support a franchise.
