This is a story that's got legs. In fact, the story is moving quicker than the guy it's about.

Gary Peterson, in his Bay Area News Group column Sunday, wrote that Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was "rumored to have spent part of the offseason at a clinic being treated for lethargy addiction ...."

That joke refers to Russell's notorious work-lite ethic, and to reports that he has been in Arizona at an athletic training program. I, too, have written lines that were so cute that readers missed the joke. Peterson's jest was taken literally by one Bay Area TV sportscaster, who reported Russell's "treatment" as news.

So it's been in print and on TV - JaMarcus is in lethargy rehab. From the e-chat at various Raiders' fan sites, it's clear that for many, the jest has morphed into fact.

Russell did go to Arizona, although if he actually enrolled in a shape-up program, it's news to Raiders' execs.

The interesting thing is not that a columnist's jest was misconstrued, or that a TV reporter misconstrued it. What's fascinating is that Russell's body of, uh, work in three NFL seasons makes the jokey report totally believable.

Russell has become the poster dude for lethargy, a condition waiting to be clinically approved.

Soon doctors will explain that lethargy isn't a character fault, it's a disease. If a golfer can be addicted to sex, why can't a quarterback be addicted to sloth? At least Russell is a recovering non-workaholic.

By the way, on YouTube I saw a clip, "JaMarcus spins twice & slings it 53." Russell, then quarterbacking LSU, and a good 50 pounds lighter than the Russell of today, makes a dazzlingly nimble escape from a pass rush and completes a bomb. If only he could move like that now ...

I need to cover myself here. Maybe Russell really did check into the Lazy Star Dude Ranch & Lethargy Clinic in Phoenix. If so, I wish him luck making it to the meetings.

It's one thing to have the physical drive to be fitter and slimmer and something entirely different to have the mental wherewithal to do the job that you are contracted to do and do it well. In either case you have to care!

Well read on a few reports that Russell has been working out in Arizona, so we're happy to knock him when hes 'blinging' it all offseason but from the small bits i've read it sounds good.

BUT last year it sounded promising about this receiver camp (which didnt seem to happen), time will tell.  At least its better to hear about Russell working out than not

There are no facts stated other than he was in Arizona, which doesn't mean a great deal on the surface. If he did attend the clinic then that alone would be a big step to "getting better". However, there are no confirmed reports that he has done anything.

Exactly, you just dont know whats true.  But as its Russell people only believe the negative stuff.  I'm in the middle and want to just hear whats happening, some reports have said hes working out, then it was this weird rumour about the clinic.

You're right about the negative stuff. Unfortunately it's that type of reporting that makes for better copy.

I have no real expectations that Russell will do anything new in preparation for next season but I do hope for his sake that he heeds the advice that he has been given regarding the main criticisms from previous seasons.

Totally, if come mini camp time or training camp hes fat and lazy then lets hope we get rid of him soon.  He messed up last year big time after showing potential the year before, hes in last chance saloon.  Gradkowski surprising us all was great as we might have found a gem ('might') but either way it'll make Russell work harder.

Looking back Cable messed up by basically giving the job instantly to Russell and going on about Garcia just being a backup.  IF Russell wins a QB job fair and square then fair enough but i'm glad hes been taking down a peg or two last year.  Think he really needed that.

He probably hasn't been 230lbs since middle school. 250 might represent a fitter/healthier weight.

It would certainly be a start and he might be better received in the locker room if he was making the effort.

What everyone is saying is that Russell need to lose weight; now coming into camp at 250 lbs would be awesome; but if he can go below that would be even better.
