we have had the ball for 2 minutes and 58 seconds in the 4th quarter, our d is gassed and playing prevent and we can't get a first down. we deserve to lose.  Angry

Gutted

Really thought we had that one.  Gutted.  Went soft on defense, DeAngelo Hall is about 15 yards away from his WR !

Might not have made a huge difference but when we got the ball back on 2nd down Rusell took the snap with 12 seconds remaining, someone has to tell him to snap when theres 1 or 2 seconds left and try to run down the clock as much as possible.

Well no one gave us a chance before the game, our passing game still sucks (bar one play), o-line did an okay job, no pressure late in the game though, gutted

Make that 3 min 10 seconds.

We gave up 200 yards and 3 scoring drives in a row after having a great 3 quarters before that.

We couldn't put the ball in the endzone in the first half and gave up the farm in the 4 th quarter.

It was nice knowing you Kiff and be sure to thank Ryan and DeAngelo Hall on your way out!

God I feel sick!

Trent Edwards passing stats were below average when the 3rd quarter starts and now he looks like Jim Kelly back from the dead (so to speak)

Just got back from watching the game and I can say Hall is useless. He is 10 yards infront of the wr. Our d was at fault for this one.

I was a fan of Hall after that int but the 4Q he was dire.  HOWEVER whatever CB we put opposite Aso will get picked on.  Hall reminds me of Buchanon who was like toast quite a few times, but again any CB opposite Charles Woodson would have got picked on.

I hate the prevent defense !  But we do need our offense to do a bit more, take away that one long huge play and we didnt do much at all

I've just got back from a very long journey and had to have a look at the score.  I saw that the Bills scored 17 points in the final quarter amd the firhst thing I thought was "they fucking went with a prevent D didn't they, lol.

Hopefully I will get a look at the game tomorrow but this smells of last year where we controlled games but couldn't kill the fuckers off in the 4th.

Postgame wrap
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, September 21st, 2008 at 5:22 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Quick hits from the Raiders 24-23 loss to the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium:

– Did the Raiders run out of gas on defense or become to passive?

They built a 16-7 lead with a combination of a natural rush and some well-timed blitzes, but seemed to have the air sucked out of them during Buffalo’s 96-yard, 16-play drive which resulted in a 3-yard touchdown run by Marshawn Lynch.

Tommy Kelly, dominant in the first half and into the third quarter, wasn’t getting the push he did earlier. Gerard Warren left with a neck injury. Derrick Burgess, who gave Langston Walker all he could handle early on, was bothered by his shoulder and was “winded,” coach Lane Kiffin said.

Safety Gibril Wilson, who blitzed a few times with success in terms of pressuring Trent Edwards, was ejected on Lynch’s touchown and replaced by rookie Tyvon Branch.

“It just seemed like they just played a little harder,” cornerback DeAngelo Hall said. “We came out early in this game fighting, clawing. Towards the end I could just feel myself kind of not having the same punch we had early in the game. I definitely felt it myself. I let some balls get caught on me, and if you want to win games you’ve got to win them in the fourth quarter.”

Hall giveth, but he also taketh away. His interception of an Edwards pass when the Bills quarterback saw one-on-one coverage with Evans set up Russell’s 1-yard run to cap off a 13-yard drive.

– Raiders fans can only hope with another year of development, Russell will be where Edwards is now.

The Raiders sacked him three times and knocked him down several other times _ just like he was at Stanford. Turns out that experience was a positive, and not a negative.

“There was a play I was scrambling on where I hit my head and it’s a wait-and-see situation. How bad are you hurt? I was a little bit groggy but it was one of those things where you can either stay down or go out, or can get back up and try to win the football game,” Edwards said. “I was faced with a lot of those situations at Stanford. I was faced with it today and I wasn’t going down and I wasn’t staying down.”

Edwards was 14-for-18 for 183 yards, a touchdown and 12 passing first downs on his last three drives.

– Russell, meanwhile, has not thrown an interception in three games but also has yet to put together a drive or drives with any sort of flow or rhythm. Part of that has to do with Lane Kiffin’s firm belief that he doesn’t have the supporting cast to have that kind of offense.

The Raiders opened the game throwing on six of their first eight passes, but Kiffin didn’t see enough of a payoff to keep it up. The Raiders ended up running 30 times and passing it 19.

Russell probably has enough clout to get more pass attempts by raising a fuss, but he is going along with the plan.

“Just keep making good decisions, check the ball down, as we speak all week during practice. Which I think I did today,” Russell said. “Just try and go out there and play, and if the interception does happen, just keep playing and don’t let it bother you none.”

The Raiders converted just 2 of 12 third-downs.

– Javon Walker lives. He caught two quick passes for 18 yards, involving him in the offense for the first time. Then he vanished for the rest of the day.

– One of the reasons Kiffin played it safe with Russell? He said it was because Bills end Aaron Schobel “ran right by Mario (Henderson)” on one of the first five plays of the game.

Schobel finished with four tackles, two tackles for losses and a pair of hurries.

– Darren McFadden insists his right turf toe was not an issue, but he had trouble maintaining his footing all day.

“He switched three different times,” Kiffin said. “He couldn’t stay up. That was obviously a factor with him and I think at least four times he went to the ground before anybody touched him.”

The Raiders still have yet to introduce McFadden into the passing game. He caught three passes for six yards.

McFadden had a pain-killing injection before the game.

– The argument could be made early in the game that Michael Bush could have played more, as he gained 49 yards on his first six carries. But he had just six yards on his last eight attempts and wasn’t the force late he was against a much more forgiving Chiefs team.

“They were filling their gaps,” McFadden said. “It wasn’t like last week. We had a lot of gaps that weren’t filled. But it was something that they were filling their gaps and coming downhill.”

– Leading 16-7, and with the ball near midfield, Kiffin called for three runs and punted. He got exactly what he hoped for, with Shane Lechler pinning the Bills at the 4-yard line (he had four kicks inside the 20) and the Raiders dominating defense on the field.

Kiffin will get his share of criticism for being too conservative, but the best unit on the field up to that point was the Raiders defense and it was the right call.

– The job security issue has been weathered tactfully by Raiders players and with some humor by Kiffin, but if something doesn’t happen either way it’s going to be a problem.

Beat writers stopped asking about last Wedneday, with Kiffin jokingly wondering where all the questions were on Thursday. They’ll come every week from writers from other cities, both during conference calls and after the game.

There was no hint of a grin when Kiffin asked about it Sunday, as he gave yet another variation on his “no control” spin.

Cornerback DeAngelo Hall admitted he had no idea what might happen and said the Raiders did more than simply let down Kiffin.

“I think we felt like we let everybody down,” Hall said. “We let the fans down, we let Mr. Davis down. It’s then National Football League. You’re going to win games, you’re going to lose games. We’ve got to get ready for San Diego now.”

An NFL Network correspondent wondered if Russell “felt bad” for Kiffin.

“For him? I feel bad for myself,” Russell said. “He’s a part of the organization and the team, so why wouldn’t I?”

– Probably no one wants to hear it in the aftermath of a hugely disappointing defeat, but this is a huge upgrade when compared to the last two times the Raiders were on the road against playoff-caliber teams.

Those games last season against Green Bay and Jacksonville were blowouts early and lost by a combined score of 87-18.

– The Raiders defense was worn out to the point where Kiffin didn’t call any time outs as the Bills got in position because Buffalo simply would have gotten closer for the kick.

“I wanted to keep that field goal where it was and give hi a chance to miss that, rather than calling time outs,” Kiffin said. “I didn’t want them to hand it to Marshawn again and all of a sudden they’d be down to the 5-yard line and have a chip shot.”

– Wilson’s ejection after Lynch’s touchdown gave the Raiders another personal foul to go with four in the opening week loss to Denver.

Buffalo then kicked off from its own 45 and pinned Johnnie Lee Higgins back at the 6.

“Branch was in there, and looking at it quick, I saw one where he got slipped off (and gave up) six or seven yards extra,” Kiffin said. “We just have to make better decisions. That was a crucial 15-yard penalty. That takes away your chance of a big return on the kickoff after the personal foul.”

Higgins opened the game with a 69-yard kickoff return and later had a 20-yard punt return.

In fact we had to go out of our way tolose that one.

I get more pissed off after close losses or snatching defeat from the jaws of victory than I do from a blowout.

I was resigned and dejected after the Broncos loss but angry and ready to kill after yesterday.

Here is the film break down of the 4th qtr meltdown. By my friend at NFL forums. By the look at it Morrison, Howard and Hall are the main culprits.

 D Collapse

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After beating crap outta QB all day, pass rush suddenly disappeared. As BF went, their last 3 possesions, 96 yards to a TD, 69 yards to a TD, and 47 to the game-losing FG.

Ryan almost never used the same DL twice.

The 3 drives make up 30 plays.

Warren played only 4 of em, got hurt, never came back.

JLH scored between BF's TD's.

1-10-4: L to R, Burg, Kelly, Wakefield, Rich, 4 rush. Coverage forces scramble R, Ho gets him at +5.

2-5-9: L to R, Burg, Kelly, Warren, Edwards. Lynch over LG, +0. Mo runs thru TE, BOOM, tackles. RB crushes edge vs #60, great. Sands got turned, bad.

3-5-9: Always L to R, Burg, Kelly, Warren, Ed. Burg bulls Langston into QB, who actually 360's in endzone, turns around and finds Lynch L flat. RB has angle for loss, juked into the ground, Lynch gets inside, Edwards chases it down for +6. <<Who screwed up: RB>>

1-10-15: Burg, Warren, Kelly, Ed. No heat. Royal +5, L side, Ho covers and tackles.

2-5-20: same 4, no heat. Pass to Lynch, middle +4---Mo and RB have him, inside/out, Mo gets juked down, plays nets +16. <<Who screwed up: Mo>>

1-10-36: Burg, Sands, Wake, Ed. Lynch +4 over RG vs nickel Routt, who fills and tackles, Wilson helps.

2-6-40: same 4. Both E's fast, just past. Pass doinks off Wake's hat, negating PI vs Ho.

3-6-40: Burg, Kelly, Sands, Ed. Kelly stunts, coming around Burg, quick throw, Reed +8, Branch covers and tackles. <<Branch>>

1-10-48: Burg, Sands, Kelly, Edwards. Kelly gets spun around, draws a hold, I saw it live, was shocked the refs called it. Negates +15 to Reed, R side, beating Hall in man. <<Hall>>

1-20-38: Burg, Rich, Sands, Ed. Burg spins free, into QB's face, Richardson coming too, forces throw, +0, R flat, dropped by #80, Wilson all over him.

2-20-38: same 4. Shotgun, fake draw R, roll L, TE drags L. Ed's caught between QB and TE. But it's Mo who bought the fake and is totally outta position, he chases and tackles TE for +17. <<Mo>>

3-3-45: Burg, Sands, Kelly, Edwards. Parish +13, vs Hall, hook, R side, Hall tackles. Burg's speed forces step up, no DT's. <<Hall>>

1-10-32: Burg, Kelly, Sands, Ed. Blitz---Ho and Mo, both middle. Pop pass to Evans who goes out R side, pass goes in, Hall covers.

2-10-32: Burg, Kelly, Sands, Ed. Reed beats Hall, slant R, +8, breaks Hall's tackle, nets +17. Kelly and Burg good push. <<Hall>>

1-10-15: 3-4 D. Wake, Sands, Rich. RB stacked L, outside Wake. Alston stacked R, outside #98. Mo and Ho, next. Then, the 4 DB's. No Burg. Lynch runs RG for +5. Ho fills, hits at +2, gets dragged 3 more. Wake clean from behind assists. Mo soft, past. <<Mo>>

2-5-10: same D. No Burg. Wilson soft in zone. Reed +7, R side. <<Wilson>>

1-3-3: 3 man line, Kelly, Sands, Rich. No Burg. RB stacks L, Alston R, with Wilson squished between #98 and Alston. Wilson's driven out by motion WR who's now wing. Rich crunched in by LT, holding, but I wouldn't call it either. Alston good. RB good. Sands and Kelly, good. Mo soft and blind. Ho watching. Lynch bowls over LG for a TD. <<Wilson, Rich, Mo>>

***

Branches tackles the KOR.

1-10-31: Burg, Kelly, Sands, Ed. Blitz---Mo hits the middle once, then walled. Deep fade L, Routt all over it.

2-10-31: same 4. Blitz---Branch and Ho, the former fast and dangerous, til FB knocks him past at last sec. QB untouched at 4 secs. Coverage. Scrambles L for +4.

3-6-35: Burg, Kelly, Sands, Ed. Reed +22. Deep look in, R, vs zone. Hall's fingers underneath, just past. Huff just late. Kelly good push, no hands up. <<Hall, Huff>>

1-10-43: Burg, Wake, Kelly, Ed. Hardy drops out, R side, at +10, covered close by Huff and Hall, zone.

2-10-43: No Burg. 3-man rush, Kelly, Wake, Scott. Wake flattens QB, ouch, at 4 secs. Evans +13 beats Hall in man, R sideline. <<Hall>>

1-10-30: No Burg. Wake, Sands, Ed. Evans +16, cross, L to R, zone. <<Mo>>

1-10-14: Kelly, Sands, Ed. Burg stacks L and comes, Ho's opposite and also blitzes. Sands and Ho crunch QB hard. Parrish from slot L beats Routt at L flag. <<Routt>>

***

Our ball, after touchback.

1-10-20. Russell trips on Grove, Bush runs for no gain. Henderson got beat inside by #95 who came down and did us in. All else grade good---Gallery, Grove, Carlsyle, Green, Miller and Grif. <<Henderson, Russell>>

2-10-20. Bush loses 2. Carlysle got run thru like no one's there by Stroud. Grif changes mind in hole. Miller ends up fighting #90 in the hole when Grif then Bush run up his back. <<Carlysle, Grif>>

3-12-18: 4 rushers vs 6 blockers. QB is not at all threatened. Throws timing deep fade to Curry at 2 secs---no chance.

***

Condo, Wms and Eugene tackle the PR after Stewart misses on the 30, 59 yard punt, 11 return.

1-10-34: Burg, Kelly, Sands, Ed. Reed +11. Sands ad libs stunt around Burg, smashes QB at 4 secs. Slot L WR, picks with TE, D switches, Ho late. <<Ho>>

1-10-45: same 4, zone. Parrish, middle, +10, gets 6 more after catch. Man, Routt over slot L, way soft vs cross into traffic. No heat, pass at 3 secs. <<Routt>>

1-10-39: 3-4 D, Wake, Sands, Ed. Lynch over LT, cuts back, +6. Ho stacks R of Ed, blitzes himself outta play. Ed's way too far upfield, ears back. Sands penetrates great, forces cutback, just past, dives back for ankles, just misses. Mo, good angle, fills, misses at +3. Branch grabs on, dragged 3 yards. <<Ed, Mo>>

2-4-33: Burg, Sands, Kelly, Ed. Lynch sweeps L, +9. Ed's too far up. Kelly's next, runs down fast, almost gets Lynch with R arm, not his fault. It's Ho who hit the wrong gap way too soon, guessing, wrong. Mo comes across, gets Lynch outta bounds.

1-10-24: Burg, Sands, Kelly, Rich. Lynch over LG, +5. Kelly walled in. Rich walls edge, falls back in hole, tackles from behind, nice play. Branch thru TE, tackles, excellent. Mo walled out by #71. Ho pushed back by G, not very physical. <<Kelly, Mo, Ho>>

2-5-19: Burg, Kelly, Sands, Rich. Sands tosses #67, tackles Lynch for no gain. Branch comes up, assists.

3-5-19: FG.

***

In 30 downs, Ryan ran 16 different DL's. 3-man line, 8 times.

Burg, Kelly, Sands, Ed were used 8 times. No other L to R combo did more than 2 plays.

LDE: Burg 23, Wake 3, Kelly 4

RDE: Rich 6, Ed 22, Kelly 1, Scott 1

DT: Kelly 18, Wake 5, Warren 4, Sands 23, Rich 2.

I have just seen the game in its entirity and all I can say is wow - The 4th quarter meltdown was unbelievable and have to agree that the main culprits there were Hall from about 7 minutes until the end played at least 10 yards off his man on virtually every play and the middle backers were way too soft in the zone created huge spaces for the Bills to run into without picking up the reads quick enough.  Wilson's dumbass rejection (I was always taught never to retaliate immediately, you've got the rest of the game to get the fucker back).  That line was beastly all day long with great penetration.

The O did a hell of a lot right in that game.  It was just a pity that McFadden was having problems cutting.  You saw he went down too many times because of it.  Russell played a steady game and is maturing very well.  Shall we talk about Johnny Lee Higgins too??  I am glad he was not cut and is getting smarter every game.  Always a threat on returns and has learnt not to try and make something happen if nothing is there.  Looks like he will make a good receiver too if that TD is anything to go by.

Kiffin's only mistake during that game really was the timeouts at the end and unfortunately Ryan should take the brunt of the D going prevent leaving us weak in the middle as well as Hall for not playing up to expectations and the LB corps for not reading their zones well enough towards the end.
