Raiders Ground Jets 16-13 in Overtime ThrillerSebastian Janikowski's franchise record 57-yard field goal with 2:30 left in overtime gave The Oakland Raiders a 16-13 victory over the New York Jets at the Oakland Coliseum in 2008 NFL Regular Season Week 7 action. QB JaMarcus Russell threw for 203 yards and a score and rookie DE Trevor Scott chalked up his first two career quarterback sacks. WR Javon Walker scored his first touchdown as a Raider and SS Gibril Wilson snagged his first interception as a member of the Silver and Black. CB DeAngelo Hall upped his team lead in interceptions to three, and rookie WR Chaz Schilens made his first career start at wide receiver.
The Jets won the opening coin toss and elected to receive. Janikowski’s opening kickoff sailed through the end zone for a touchback. The Jets offense took the field at their own 20 with Brett Favre at quarterback. The Jets drove to the Raiders 22 before having to settle for a K Jay Feely 40-yard field goal attempt. The successful kick gave the Jets a 3-0 lead with 11:41 left in the first quarter.
Rookie safety Tyvon Branch returned the ensuing kickoff 20 yards to the Oakland 30 where the Silver and Black attack took the field with JaMarcus Russell at quarterback. The Jets forced a three-and-out and P Shane Lechler came on to punt to RB Leon Washington. Rookie DE Trevor Scott flew down the field and dropped Washington for no gain at the New York 13 after a 49-yard punt.
The Jets moved to their 20 before the Raiders forced a punt. P Reggie Hodges 45-yard punt went out of bounds at the Raiders 35. The Raiders drove to the Jets 47 before Lechler was called on to punt for the second time. Washington muffed the 33-yard punt and LB Sam Williams recovered at the New York 16.
Five plays later, Janikowski drilled a 29-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:49 left in the first quarter.
After Washington returned the ensuing kickoff to the Jets 16, New York moved out to their own 44 before the Raiders defense forced a punt on 4th and 4. WR Johnnie Lee Higgins returned Hodges punt to the Oakland 38 but an offsides penalty gave the Jets a first down. Several plays later, safety Gibril Wilson intercepted a Favre pass in the end zone and the Raiders took over at their own 20 with 9:01 left in the second quarter.
The Raiders drove to the Jets 23 before having to settle for a Janikowski 40-yard field goal attempt. The kick was no good and the Jets took possession at their own 30 with 4:04 left in the second quarter.
The Jets moved to the Raiders 45 before the Silver and Black forced a punt. Hodges came on to kick to Higgins who made a fair catch at the Oakland 12. The Raiders were unable to mount a scoring drive and the first half ended with the game tied at 3-3.
Branch returned the opening kickoff of the second half to the Oakland 30. Russell capped the 9-play, 70-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to WR Javon Walker. Janikowski’s extra point was good and the Raiders led 10-3 with 9:35 left in the third quarter.
Washington fielded Janikowski’s ensuing kickoff eight yards deep in the end zone for a touchback and the Jets took possession at their own 20. The Jets drove into Raiders territory before the Raiders forced a punt. Higgins returned Hodges punt 22 yards to the Oakland 37.
The Raiders were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt. Lechler’s 60-yard punt bounced into the end zone for a touchback and New York took over at their own 20. The Jets drove to midfield before the Raiders forced a punt. Higgins made a fair catch of Hodges’ 33-yard punt at the 17. The Raiders moved to the Jets 39 before the drive stalled. Lechler’s punt was downed at the New York 13.
Washington’s 11-yard TD run capped a 9-play, 87-yard drive that took 5:25 off the clock. Feely’s extra point was good and the game was tied at 10-10 with 8:00 left in 4th quarter.
The Raiders next drive was kept alive when LB Jon Alston scampered 21 yards on a fake punt. The Raiders drove to the Jets 19 before settling for a Janikowski field goal attempt. The successful 37-yard field goal gave the Raiders a 13-10 lead with 2:56 left in the fourth quarter.
New York’s next possession ended when a Jets receiver broke off his route and Favre threw deep. CB DeAngelo Hall picked off the errant pass and returned the interception to the Jets 40.
The Jets held the Raiders to a three-and-out and Lechler came on to punt. Lechler’s punt was downed at the Jets 5-yard line and the Jets took over with 1:24 left in the game. The Jets drove to the Raiders 34 as Favre spiked the ball to stop the clock with 12 seconds left. The Jets ran one more play, an incomplete pass, before bringing Feely on for a 52-yard field goal attempt. The Raiders called time out before the kick, which Feely missed. Feely made the second attempt and tied the game at 13-13 with three seconds left.
Branch’s return of the ensuing kickoff ended regulation and the game went to overtime.
The Jets won the overtime coin toss and elected to receive. Washington returned the opening kickoff of the extra period to the Jets 22. The Jets drove to their 49 before rookie DE Trevor Scott recorded his second sack of the day and forced a punt. Higgins fielded the punt and was dropped immediately at the Raiders 20.
The Jets held the Raiders to a three-and-out and Lechler came in to punt. Washington returned the punt to the 29 but a block in the back penalty moved New York back to their own 10. The Raiders returned the favor with a three-and-out of their own.
Higgins returned the punt 11 yards to the Oakland 45. The Jets held the Raiders to another three-and-out and Lechler came on to punt. The punt was downed at the New York 18. After picking up one first down, the Jets faced 3rd and 12 at their own 33. The Raiders defense held and forced a punt. Higgins made a fair catch at the 19 and the Raiders offense took the field with 4:36 left in overtime.
The Raiders drove to the Jets 39 before Janikowski came on to try to win the game with a 57-yard field goal attempt. The kick split the uprights and gave the Raiders a 16-13 win!
NEXT WEEK: The Raiders make their second of four total trips to the Eastern Time Zone to face the Ravens in Baltimore on Sunday, October 26. The Raiders traveled to Buffalo to play the Bills on September 21.
